Measuring Innovation in Consulting Firms

If it is true that innovation provides consultancies with a competitive advantage then how might they go about measuring this activity? One of my MBA students, Christoph Mandel, has been working with the Management Consultancies Association (MCA) to help answer this question.

By examining different aspects of the MCA innovation prize winners, Christoph developed a set of metrics which enabled these projects to be scored on different criteria which were internally consistent with the scoring of the MCA itself. The model can, of course, be tweaked to suit the needs of specific consultancies and all the usual caveats apply about trying to measure intangibles.

A summary of the dissertation can be found here, and if you wish to see the full project, contact Christoph here.
